Today I’m actually going to be reviewing an older online defensive driving course. Please note that this course is only certified in the state of Texas, so if you need to take a defensive driving course in another state, select your state on this page.
To be honest, I never really paid much attention to the A Sense Of Humor Defensive Driving Course because I knew they were a smaller online defensive driving course and they don’t have the millions of students that other corporate courses can boast about.
All these years, I just assumed A Sense Of Humor Driving was owned by some dude running the operation out of his house. There are so many low quality online defensive driving courses out there that I don’t even pay attention to half of them. Again, my assumption was that A Sense Of Humor Defensive Driving would be the same as all those other low quality courses.
…That is until the day I met the guy who owns this course during a conference I was attending in Las Vegas. He was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met and since my site reviews online traffic schools and driver’s ed courses, we obviously had a lot to talk about.
After talking for literally hours, I knew I had to write up this A Sense Of Humor Driving review and give this online defensive driving course the props it deserves. Quite honestly, I’ve never quite seen an online defensive driving course operate the way A Sense Of Humor Driving does.
My opinion of A Sense Of Humor Driving is already showing through and it’s probably pretty obvious by now that I think this is a quality course to sign up with, but let’s get into some of the details anyway.
Yes, A Sense Of Humor Driving Is Legit
A Sense Of Humor Defensive Driving is absolutely legit as long as you live in the state of Texas. If you do not live in the state of Texas, A Sense Of Humor Driving will not work, so check out this page and choose your state for a list of online traffic schools that are certified in your state.
Otherwise, assuming you live in Texas, you’re good to go. A Sense Of Humor Driving is certified in the entire state of Texas for all counties and court jurisdictions. You can see their official certification here and here, but I’ve also included image captures below.
The Fascinating History Of A Sense Of Humor Driving
Did you know A Sense Of Humor Driving is one of the oldest defensive driving courses in Texas? This defensive driving course started off by teaching defensive driving in classrooms in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas way back in 1992! They have been certified ever since.
In those 25 years, their concept has remained the same… They understand that taking a defensive driving course sucks. They also understand you’re not taking the course by choice, but you have to, and they are providing you with a service that will attempt to make it as painless as possible.
Learning about defensive driving doesn’t have to be boring. Now, I’m not saying you’ll have the best time of your life going through A Sense Of Humor Driving, but what I am saying is that they get it.
You just want to get this done as quickly, painlessly, and as cheaply as you possibly can. They’ve been marketing themselves as that solution for 25 years now, so clearly they’re doing something right.
Finally, in 2006, they decided to stop resisting the internet and launched their Texas state approved ONLINE defensive driving course.
Surprisingly, this didn’t change the core of who they are, which is a locally owned small business in Texas serving other local Texans.
They didn’t expand into out of state offices, they didn’t hire offshore customer service representatives, and they don’t try to screw people over by charging hidden fees at the end of the courses like so many others do.
If not for any other reason, signing up for this course is helping a real small business owner with a real family to support in your very own state (Richland Hills to be exact).
What I DON’T LIKE About A Sense Of Humor Driving
Here’s the thing… As I said above, this is a legit locally owned small business in Texas. There are good and bad things about that. While I think the pros of this driving school vastly outweighs the bad, this review would not be balanced without me stating what I don’t really like about it.
My biggest issue with this course is that it is outdated. The larger corporate owned online defensive driving courses in Texas are able to dump a lot more money into course creation, marketing, making their website flashy, high-tech graphics and animations, etc.
Most of the big corporate owned courses have had millions of people go through their courses and they are approved in sometimes dozens of states. This enables them to throw a lot more money around.
That just isn’t the case with A Sense Of Humor Driving. They only care about working with people in the state of Texas and they plan on keeping their operation local.
They have no desire to become a large corporate owned entity that is only driven by profit. Unfortunately, that means they don’t have the funds to constantly update their course. So, if you’re looking for the most flashy and high tech course around, this one probably isn’t it.
With that said, they have recently launched a new video course so if you prefer to get the course with 100% video, that is now an option for you.
What I DO LIKE About A Sense Of Humor Driving
In the section above I describe some of the disadvantages about A Sense Of Humor Driving due to them being owned by a small business vs. a corporation. However, the advantages of supporting these guys is worth it in my opinion.
One of the worst aspects of the “online defensive driving industry” is the lack of any quality customer service at all. I won’t get into all of the specific here, but it is very common for people to need to contact customer support for one reason or another no matter which course you sign up with.
This is due to rules and regulations set up by the state. Sometimes you’ll need to actually talk to a human. With most of the corporate owned courses, you get to talk to someone that lives overseas and barely has any authority to do anything for you but put you on hold for the next person up the line that MAYBE can help.
It’s incredibly frustrating. With A Sense Of Humor Driving you just call them up at their local small office in Richland Hills, TX and talk to them yourself.
They also don’t pull all the really shady tricks that many other courses try. A lot of courses might advertise that they are a certain price, but once you go through the entire thing they want you to pay ridiculous processing fees, shipping fees, and other bogus charges for “extra features” you may have used during your course.
Want to complain about those additional fees you didn’t know about? Good luck contacting customer support to get it fixed. You’re not going to have that problem with A Sense Of Humor Driving.
When you sign up for A Sense Of Humor Driving, you are already paying for everything upfront. For example, the course fee includes an audio read-along feature that just about any other online defensive driving course in Texas will charge you extra for.
You also get free certificate processing and they will drop it in the mail within’ 24hrs of you completing the course. No extra fees, no trickery, no games, etc.
There’s also something nice about this being a very basic course. Some of these online defensive driving courses go a bit too crazy with videos and animations and games, etc. Most of us just want to get the course done as quickly and as easily as possible, right? Right.
Lastly, while I wouldn’t choose to spend my Saturday night going through an online defensive driving class, they do help to make it fun. Their mascot, Eddie, will be with you throughout the course.
Eddie is relatable, because he’s not a “driving instructor” per say. He’s just a regular driver like you that has good habits and bad ones. Basically, you get to learn from his mistakes and he makes it entertaining as you go through the course.
Is A Sense Of Humor Defensive Driving Difficult?
No, A Sense Of Humor Driving is a very easy course that just about anyone should be able to pass without any trouble at all, even if you’re only barely paying attention.
There will be a quiz after each section that you must pass in order to continue throughout the course, and then there is a final exam that you will also need to pass at the end. These quizzes and tests are timed, but they are open book and if you can’t pass the final exam, you honestly shouldn’t be on the road anyway!
In Partnership with Aceable
Thanks to its partnership with Aceable, A Sense Of Humor Driving is now offering Parent Taught Drivers Ed to help students get their permit and license. They are also offering driver’s ed for Texas adults aged 18 to 24, thanks to this.
Although it’s highly unlikely, if you haven’t heard of Aceable yet, this is the fastest-growing driver’s ed provider in all of Texas. It has been fully approved by the state.
It is not just available online, like most other driver’s ed programs are, it also created a dedicated app for both Android and iOS devices so you can complete its course anytime, anywhere. You simply need to log in and out as often as you like.
Moreover, its free in-app audio reads the course to you so you can simply listen. You can even take the actual DPS written test online or through the app – how cool is that!
Money Back Guarantee
A Sense Of Humor Driving offers a very liberal money back guarantee.
As long as you request your money back within’ 30 days and you haven’t already passed the final exam, you can get your money back for absolutely any reason.
I’m really glad they provide this because it gives people the ability to try out their course without any risk at all.
Sometimes small businesses don’t do a great job and corporations are better – this enables you to be your own judge and at least gives the small business owner the benefit of the doubt.
Customer Support
If you encounter any issues while completing the course, A Sense Of Humor Driving has an FAQ section to help you troubleshoot basic issues like forgetting your login credentials, checking which payment options are available, and how to get your Certificate of Completion.
If you are unable to find the answers you’re looking for, you can call them directly or fill out their Contact Us Form. Guaranteed that you will receive their response as soon as their customer support team becomes available.
Their office hours are from 10 AM to 7 PM (CST), on Mondays to Thursdays, and from 12 PM to 5 PM during Fridays & Saturdays.
Final Thoughts About A Sense Of Humor Driving
As a small business owner myself, I have a bit of a soft spot for other small businesses, but I also tend to expect superior and more personalized service from a small business rather than a corporation.
Fortunately, I think A Sense Of Humor Driving has found that balance. They may not offer the flashiest online defensive driving course, but they will make sure you’re satisfied.
After personally meeting the owner of this defensive driving course, I’m confident they will continue to provide the same level of service that they have been since 1992.
If you’ve been considering signing up with A Sense Of Humor Driving, I think it is more than worth using their money back guarantee to see what you think.
