So, you’re ready to finally get that driver’s license? Woo hoo! Good times!!
One of the best aspects of my job, when I was a driving instructor, was seeing the joy and happiness after students finally get that piece of plastic. Of course, it isn’t just a piece of plastic. It’s a symbol of freedom and almost acts as an official point when you go from being a kid to an adult.
Unfortunately, sometimes finances don’t cooperate. I’ve seen many students who don’t get their license until they are 18 or older because they just don’t have the money to sign up for a driving school.
It’s a vicious cycle. They don’t have money to get their driver’s license, which limits their ability to get a job and make money, which means they can’t afford to get a driver’s license. Very frustrating for sure.
If you’re in a similar position, it’s only natural to search for a free online driver’s ed course. Depending on the state you live in, it MAY be possible to find a free online driver’s ed course, which I’ll get into, but the vast majority of free online driver’s ed courses are not state-certified.
Be very, very careful about signing up for any driver’s ed course that claims to be free.
The Best Free Online Driver’s Ed Courses
I have good news and bad news. The good news is there are several free online driver’s ed courses available to help you study for your written driving exam.
The bad news is those free online driver’s ed courses are NOT certified in any state for official training purposes.
Every state has certain training requirements, including the number of hours you have to spend in a classroom or on an online driver’s ed course.
So while free online driver’s ed courses can help you study and practice for the exam, you’ll still have to sign up for a paid online driver’s ed class. If you want my suggestions, here are my top recommended online drivers ed courses.
With that said, here are some free online driver’s ed courses to help you study and pass your written test:
- Driving-Tests.org
- DMV-Permit-Test.org
- DMV-Written-Test.com
- FreeDMVPracticeTests.com
- DMV-Test-Pro.com
- DriversPrep.com
Also be sure to check out your state DMV page as many state governments also operate free practice tests and study guides.
Again, these free online driver’s ed courses do not meet state requirements for driver’s ed training, but can certainly help you pass the driving permit exam.
State Certified Online Driver’s Ed Courses I Recommend
Unfortunately, finding free online driver’s ed courses that are also state-certified is impossible in most cases. There are some colleges and even high schools that offer free online driver’s ed classes to enrolled students, but even that is still pretty rare.
The below online driver’s ed courses are not exactly free, but they are priced pretty cheaply and are of higher quality. I have personally reviewed and tested out each of these below courses.
DriversEd.com
DriversEd.com is one of the longest running online driver’s ed courses. They have had literally millions of students graduate from their courses over the past 20 years. Another advantage of using DriversEd.com is they also operate a nationwide fleet of driver’s ed vehicles and instructors. In most areas of the country, they can save you money by going with an online drivers ed and behind-the-wheel training package. What I like most about this course is the interactive 3D looking videos. In their videos, students must make a decision when a driving hazard is presented. This is a unique feature that I’ve only seen with DriversEd.com. It’s certainly worth checking out.

Aceable
Aceable is the new kid on the block when it comes to online driver’s ed courses. They have just launched a few years ago with the backing of about $5,000,000 from investors to develop the most advanced and updated online driver’s ed course. To say their investment was a success is an understatement. This is hands down, the single best online driver’s ed course ever created. The reason I recommend Aceable second on this list is simply because they aren’t approved in very many states yet. They’re working on it, but dealing with state governments can be a slow process. You can click here to see if they are certified in your state. If they are, this is the course I highly recommend you sign up for. It’s priced right and you won’t find an online driver’s ed course of higher quality than this.

Driver Ed To Go
Driver Ed To Go is another online driver’s ed course that has existed since the 90’s. Even before they operated an online driver’s ed program, they had a homeschool option with VHS tapes (remember those?!) and booklets. So, they’ve been at this for a while. This is also a cheaper course than most others as they don’t have flashy 3D videos and interactive features. Driver Ed To Go is mostly a text-based course, which is what a lot of people prefer. If that sounds like what you’re after, check out this course as they have a very friendly price point.

Florida Is The Only State That Offers Official Free Online Driver’s Ed Courses To Everyone
If you live in the state of Florida, I’ve got some really good news for you. The state of Florida is the only state that offers a fully state certified free online driver’s ed course. This is the only place you can sign up for it.
This free online driver’s ed course is called the Florida Virtual School or FLVS. FLVS is a normal public school which is why it is free. In short, you’ve already paid for this course through your taxes.
Now, if you’re wondering if there’s a catch, you’re right. If you decide to take the free online driver’s ed course in Florida, it will take you much longer to complete and it requires far more study time than if you sign up for a paid online driver’s ed course in Florida. However, if you can stomach that, this really is a fully legit and 100% free online driver’s ed course.

Final Thoughts On Taking A Free Online Driver’s Ed Course
As you can see, finding a free online driver’s ed course isn’t all that difficult, but the vast majority of them are not state-certified. I think the free online driver’s ed courses that exist are excellent to supplement your official driver’s ed class, but as they say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch and the same holds true for online driver’s ed. In most cases, you just have to save up and choose a legitimate online driver’s ed school.
