Did you know you can take your required Texas defensive driving course either online or offline in a classroom setting? Taking Texas defensive driving online has actually become the most widely used option as many aren’t using classroom courses anymore.
As a former driving instructor, you might think I am actually against these online Texas defensive driving programs, but the opposite is actually true. I’m not sure why anyone would ever want to do this in a classroom, so I’m going to go over the Texas defensive driving online courses that have been approved specifically for the state of Texas. If for some reason you want to take your defensive driving course in a classroom setting, most of them are about the same, so just find the cheapest one in your area.

Texas Defensive Driving Online Course Reviews, & Comparisons
I’ve got the full list of approved online Texas defensive driving schools posted below, but first, I thought I’d give my personal recommendations and reviews. As a CDL-A driving instructor, I’m sort of a nerd when it comes to this stuff. I actually went through these courses myself, and as a matter of fact, I assisted in creating the world’s largest free online commercial driver’s license training course.
If you want to know my personal opinion, I would definitely sign up for this online course. However, I know you probably want to check out the different options available, so the below courses are the ones I believe are best. If for some reason you don’t like any of the courses I recommend, you can get the full list of all approved Texas defensive driving courses towards the bottom of this page.
So here ya go – just stick with one of these top 7 Texas defensive driving courses and you’ll have that ticket dismissed shortly.
The 8 Best Texas Defensive Driving Online Courses For 2022
#1: iDriveSafely
iDriveSafely is one of the best online defensive driving courses you can sign up for in Texas and it’s the most widely used course as well. If you’d rather take a text-based defensive driving course, this will be a better option. Please note that as of 2022 they have an optional “upgrade” to video, but you can stick with the text-based course if that’s what you prefer. With over 5 million people having taken the course already, they’ve definitely proven themselves. This school was one of the very first TEA Texas Education Agency) approved courses. It’s high quality, the price is good, you can start and stop the course whenever you want, they’ve been around forever, they include limited graphics, animations, and video to spice things up a bit, and they have a customer service team based right here in America. I’ve had this school listed on my site for several years now and am still happy to recommend them. Oh, and they’ve got an A+ Better Business Bureau rating, too.
2022 Update: This is the very first defensive driving course in Texas that I recommended back when I started this site in 2011. It has remained one of my top recommendations every year since then and is still one of the most widely used defensive driving courses in Texas. While they made some pretty big changes in 2018, there haven’t been any major changes in 2019. In fact, I’m not happy about a change they made to their customer service hours. They used to be 24/7/365 but now they are just “extended hours” with their exact hours changing from time to time. I would have liked to see them keep the 24/7/365 customer support. Other than that, it’s about the same as it was last year, and it maintains my top rating. See my full iDriveSafely review here.

#2: Approved Course
Approved Course course was new to this list in 2019 and I actually considered moving them up to the top spot this year. While Approved Course has been around for a long time, they completely overhauled the entire course in 2018, making them one of the best options out there for defensive driving and ticket dismissal this year. The content is fresh, works well on mobile devices, and they include some additional perks such as automatic electronic certificate delivery and a customer service team that is far better than most other defensive driving courses in Texas. The content is delivered in multiple formats to help keep the boredom to a minimum. What I really like about this course is how simple the quizzes are and there is no final exam at all. Approved Course has some optional add-ons for very fair prices too such as obtaining your Texas driving record. All in all, I am very pleased with the updates they made last year and can very highly recommend this course as a fast, easy, and cheap way to complete your defensive driving requirements in Texas.
2022 Update: Approved Course has continued to make improvements to their course and still include some extra features that other courses will end up charging you additional for. This online driving school also provides the best customer service of any other online defensive driving course. This is run by a small family-owned business and their personal customer service definitely proves that. This is a great choice if you want a fast, easy, and cheap defensive driving course while also supporting a locally owned Texas small business. If you want to learn more about this course, check out my full and detailed review of Approved Course here.

#3: Aceable
Aceable is always among the highest-rated defensive driving courses in Texas, and better yet, they’re based right here in Texas. Not only do I believe it is arguably the best course, but it is also the highest-rated defensive driving course on Yelp, the Apple Store, Trust Pilot, and Facebook reviews, which all are at or very near 5 stars as of 2022. We’ve also compiled ratings from thousands of students over the past year and Aceable has an astounding 4.9 rating.
This is the fastest course allowed by Texas state law. Unfortunately, Texas requires the use of “course timers” for the online driving courses. That means, if a course is supposed to take 6 hours, it’ll take you exactly that. Most of the online defensive driving courses in Texas are just walls of text that you need to stare at before you can move onto the next page. Aceable does things a bit differently as they created a 100% video-based course. If you don’t want the course to be video-based, skip down to my next pick. In the end, this course is fast, easy, and it will work on any device. At the very least, you should check this course out and compare it to any (or all) of the courses below. The quality difference with their website alone is very obvious and noticeable.
2022 Update: Aceable remains the best option for completing your defensive driving requirements in Texas. Even though Aceable was already the best defensive driving course in Texas for 2019, that didn’t stop them from making improvements and updates to their course. Aceable made some huge updates on their already great app, but now the app is even better than ever. Learn more in this Aceable review.

#4: Improv Traffic School
There’s something you should know about me… I’m a sucker for humor, so Improv Traffic School easily gets the top spot as my favorite comedy based online Texas defensive driving course. There are several comedy based defensive driving schools that have popped up over the years, but nobody does it better than Improv. Traffic school, even when it’s taken online, is incredibly boring. It feels like it takes forever, there’s a ton of reading, and we’re mostly told things we already know for 6+ hours. What a drag.
If you’re taking a Texas defensive driving course by choice, more power to ya, but most of us only do it when we are required to. This particular school was created by a bunch of Hollywood comedians and their goal was to make it as painless as possible by adding in humor throughout the course. They also include a couple of free tickets to any of their nationwide Improv Comedy Clubs once you complete the course. Now, not everyone likes the same kind of humor I do, so take a look at the below commercial that Improv Traffic School made. If you don’t find this at least mildly amusing, you should probably go with another one of my recommendations.
2022 Update: There isn’t really much that has changed with Improv Traffic School over the past year, however, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The old saying “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” applies here. I do think this course could work a little better on mobile devices. While the course is mobile-friendly, the functionality leaves a bit to be desired. This is the only issue I’ve seen with Improv Traffic School and everything else about the course is great, particularly their comedic approach. This is a great option for 2022. #5: Get Defensive
I decided to include Get Defensive for one main reason – they guarantee that they are the cheapest Texas defensive driving online course approved in the state for 2022. Granted, I don’t think the course quality is quite as good as some of my other recommendations, but if all you really care about is paying the cheapest possible price while still going through a reputable company, this is the school for you. Like the other schools, they’ve been in business for more than a decade. Both the company and the course itself are totally legit and is the best option if you’re looking for a cheap way to go about fulfilling your driving school requirements. Keep in mind, Texas regulates the pricing pretty heavily so you won’t find much of a price difference, but you might be able to save a few bucks, right?
2022 Update: Of all the online defensive driving courses listed here, Get Defensive is the one with the most updates. Over the past couple of years, Get Defensive has been updating their course. There are now all new videos, a new user portal, and it works very well on mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. Better yet, Get Defensive didn’t increase the price. So, they are still the cheapest you can pay in Texas, but now they are actually high quality, too! Depending on how the feedback is throughout 2022, I may need to move this course up on the list. #6: DriversEd.com
DriversEd.com is a school I normally recommend for online drivers ed courses, but they have also been approved as a certified Texas driver safety course for ticket dismissal and point reduction. The only reason I didn’t list them higher is that traffic school isn’t their main business. Their main business is drivers ed while online traffic school is just a side gig for them. I also haven’t completed a detailed review of them yet. However, the course is very high quality, includes some very nice 3D graphics and animations to spice things up, and they’ve been around for a very long time. These guys know what they’re doing. They are making many improvements to their course throughout 2018 and depending on the improvements they make, I may need to list DriversEd.com a bit higher before the year is done. Even though this is listed low on my list, this is still a great Texas defensive driving online option.
2022 Update: DriversEd.com didn’t change much over the past year to the actual course content, but they did come out with a downloadable app. I’m a huge fan of these online defensive driving courses adding apps. When using a smartphone, apps run so much smoother than trying to go through the course on a mobile browser, even if it is set up to be “mobile-friendly.” This was a great improvement and I’m hoping they will now begin updating course content in 2022.

#7: Traffic School 101
Traffic School 101 has been an approved Texas defensive driving course for quite some time now. This usually isn’t a course I recommend first to people as it’s a bit outdated, but this is absolutely the best defensive driving program online if you just want a minimalist type of course. There’s no Hollywood comedians, no fancy graphics, no video, and no fluff. They just give you the basic information you need and keep things as simple as possible. If you’re not looking to be entertained or watch videos, even though this isn’t the newest course around, it could be just the program that you want. It’s also cheap, I’ve heard great things about the customer service, and every 100th customer gets to take the course for free. Will you be the lucky one?
2022 Update: Traffic School 101 hasn’t made improvements to their course in many years and they are at risk of losing their spot on this list of recommended courses. This defensive driving course doesn’t even work all that well on mobile devices. However, I have decided to keep them here as some people may actually be drawn to their minimalist approach. This is pretty much just plain text with a few pictures thrown in. If you don’t plan on using a tablet, smartphone, and just want plain text, this could actually be the best course for you. Read my full traffic 101 review here.
#8: Ticket School
Ticket School is new to this list in 2022. As the years go on, I like to add more and more schools to my reviews and comparisons, and Ticket School kept popping up on my radar. This Texas state-approved online defensive driving course has been approved in Texas for many years, but only recently have I felt they deserved a recommendation. This course was starting to get really outdated, but I’m happy to report they’ve recently had many upgrades and improvements, making this one of the best defensive driving schools in 2022. If you want to use this course on a mobile-device, Ticket School was recently updated to be much more mobile-friendly. As one of the most recently updated courses, it’s hard to not recommend them.
